Description

Upton Mill House and Mill, along with the attached bridge, is a water mill and house dated 1815, with alterations made in the 20th century. The building is constructed from coursed squared ironstone and features a slate roof with brick end and ridge stacks. It has a four-unit plan and stands three storeys tall with a four-window range. The main facade faces the mill pond to the south and includes stable doors at the center and far left, both with wood lintels. There is a plank loft door on the first floor to the left, also with a wood lintel, while the ground and first floors are fitted with two-light casement windows, again with wood lintels. The structure has a plinth, quoins, and stone-coped gables with kneelers. A datestone inscribed with the initials TSWS and the year 1815 is located on the right gable, referring to Thomas Samwell Watson Samwell. To the right of the center is the domestic part of the building, which has a two-storey lean-to extension at the rear and a 20th-century entrance on the right side. In front of the mill and house, the road crosses the mill-stream via an attached elliptical-arched ironstone bridge. It is noted that the mill machinery has been reported as removed.
