Description

79 High Street is a house dated 1697, with extensions from the 18th and 20th centuries. It is built of coursed limestone rubble and features a 20th-century tile roof with a brick stack at one end. The house has a two-unit plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a three-window range. The gable end faces the street and includes a shallow segmental bay window from around 1800 on the ground floor, along with 2-light casement windows on the first and attic floors, all featuring wooden lintels. The ground floor lintel extends nearly the entire length of the front, with timber of similar length below the first-floor window. A datestone inscribed S/TS/1697 is located on the gable, which has a stone coping and kneelers. The left side elevation has irregular glazing with a mix of sash, casement, and 20th-century windows, all with wooden lintels, and there is a single-storey 20th-century extension with a lean-to roof. To the right of the front gable end, there is a two-storey-and-attic wing made of red brick, likely from the late 18th century, which projects outwards. The end wall of this wing has a slight oversail and features thin timber-framing above the first floor, suggesting it may have previously extended over a carriage arch. The wing also includes a hipped dormer window and a brick ridge stack. The entrance is located on the right side elevation, behind the projecting wing. Inside, the house has chamfered spine beams.
