Description
The building is a water pump located on Kelmarsh Road in Clipston, dating from the late 19th century. It features a lead and wrought iron spout, a wrought iron handle, and is enclosed within a wooden casing. Above the spout, there is a metal sign that reads, "Brixworth Rural District Council. Water from this source must be boiled before being used for domestic purposes. C.T. Darwent Medical Officer of Health."
Historically, pumps became increasingly common in towns and villages throughout the 18th and 19th centuries, serving as a source of water for domestic use into the 20th century. The 1886 Ordnance Survey map of Clipston shows at least 16 pumps, most likely in private ownership, with some located by the roadside. Although there is no pump indicated on Kelmarsh Road, a well is shown at the same location, which appears on the 1900 Ordnance Survey map.
This pump is a rare and complete example of a 19th-century water pump, making it an important part of the village's character. It illustrates the social history of England and how domestic life was managed before piped water became available, fulfilling the criteria for listing.
