Description

The Kings Arms Public House is a mid-19th century establishment that incorporates older materials. It features coursed squared ironstone, a tile roof, and brick ridge and stone lateral stacks, forming an H-plan layout. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range.

The gabled wings on both the ground and first floors are complemented by a blank shield panel in between. The right gabled wing contains two-light windows on both levels, while the left wing has a two-light window with a timber lintel on the ground floor, next to a two-storey gabled porch. This porch features a doorway with a four-centred arch and a hood mould, along with a six-panel part-glazed door that has an overlight. All windows are adorned with hood moulds and iron casements with diamond panes.

Architectural details include a chamfered plinth, quoins, and a small quatrefoil panel in the left gable topped with a cross finial. A pinnacle is present on the porch, and there is a corbel head in the right gable, along with a gargoyle on the left side. The lateral stacks have octagonal stone flues.

Inside, there is an open fireplace with a depressed chamfered timber arch, which is likely re-used. The building is said to incorporate materials from Charwelton Priory. A large H relief on the gable of the central bay represents the monogram of the Hurley family, who were carpenters and builders in Farthingstone and constructed the Kings Arms, as well as other buildings in the village. The pub is included for its group value.
