Description
A late 17th-century farmhouse that was subdivided in the 19th century and is now divided into four dwellings, located on High Street, Woodford Halse. The building is constructed of coursed squared ironstone, with slate roofs and brick end and ridge stacks. It has a roughly L-shaped layout. The front facade, facing High Street (No.6), is three stories high with a two-window range visible from the street, and extends five windows deep. The central doorway has a four-panel door, partly glazed, sheltered by a gabled hood supported on timber brackets. A three-light casement window is to the right of the door, and a similar window is on the first floor, both with timber lintels. A three-light chamfered mullion attic window, also with a hood mould, is to the left. The main range is set at a right angle to High Street, and a short projecting wing runs parallel to the street, forming the right half of the street front. The gable end to the right contains a blocked three-light chamfered mullion window on the ground floor. A three-light casement window has replaced the mullions on the first floor, and a two-light mullion window remains on the second floor. The long left side elevation, two and three stories high, features 19th-century two and three-light casement windows and 20th-century doors leading to Nos. 8 and 10. Stone coped gables are present, with kneelers. The interior of No.6 retains stop-chamfered spine beams and a bressumer over an open fireplace with a bread oven.
