Description
The lych gate to the Church of St. Denys, dated 1883, is constructed from limestone ashlar and features a plain-tile roof in a High Victorian style. The road-facing elevation includes a double-stepped pointed arch with roll moulding, flanked by pairs of shafts with foliated capitals. Above the arch, there is a gable parapet adorned with crocket decoration and a finial, which displays a coat of arms in a quatrefoil surrounded by foliage. An inscription in the arch reads, "Death is the gate of Life." The rear elevation is similar but simpler, featuring a Latin inscription with the date in the gable. Each side elevation has a two-window range of small lancets, with castellated parapets above that include central gargoyles. Buttresses are positioned between the windows, with corner buttresses featuring gabled copings. The interior boasts a tiled floor and a plain rib-vaulted roof, with an inscription at the springing level that states, "When a few years are come then I shall go away when I shall not return. Job.XV.1.CH.22V." The gate is complemented by a pair of wrought iron gates.
