Description

Charwelton Hall is an 18th-century house that was altered in the 19th century. It is built of coursed squared ironstone with a tile roof and features various brick and stone stacks. The house has a double-depth plan, is two storeys high with an attic, and has a four-window range. The entrance consists of a four-panel part-glazed door with an overlight, set under a porch that has an ogee lead roof supported by fluted Doric pillars. To the left, there is a wide canted bay window from the 19th century with horned sashes that do not have glazing bars. Above the door, there is a 12-pane sash window, and to the left on the first floor, there are two 15-pane sash windows, while a window to the right has been blocked. The attic windows in the two front gables feature stone lintels and keyblocks, along with 9-pane sashes. The right gable has a stone stack on the left slope, and the gables are stone coped with kneelers. The building has quoins at the angles and a single-storey 19th-century extension to the left. The right side elevation includes a tall central round arch window with imposts that lights the staircase, and there are square raised panels between the first-floor windows. At the rear, there is a long service and stable wing of a later date, and the rear elevation has windows with stone lintels and keyblocks, most of which are blocked, along with a stone coped wall between the gables that features dummy windows. Inside, there is an 18th-century painted oak open-well staircase with wide shallow flights, turned balusters, a moulded handrail, and square newel posts.
