Description

Four houses stand on the west side of High Street in Welford. They were likely built in the 17th century and remodelled in the late 18th century. The buildings are constructed of brick, likely originally with a cruck-framed structure, and have slate roofs. Each was originally a single-unit dwelling.

The houses now present as a four-window range. They feature 19th and 20th-century casement windows set within shallow brick arches. Number 24 has a 19th-century wooden bay window. A pair of 20th-century doors are located between the windows. A rendered plinth sits below the window sills, and a raised brick string course runs between the floors. The brickwork below the string course appears to be from the late 17th century, while the brickwork above dates to the late 18th century. Brick stacks are visible at the ridge and end of the building.

Evidence of timber framing can be seen on the rear elevation of number 24. The interior of number 26 was inspected and includes chamfered ceiling beams, an open fireplace, two 18th-century corner cupboards, and 18th-century panelled doors. The dogleg staircase has an early 18th-century splat balustrade, and the first-floor landing shows evidence of a raised cruck construction.
