Description

The chest tomb of John Parkhurst is located in the churchyard of the old Church of St. Mary and dates from the late 18th century. It is made of limestone and features a stepped plinth. The tomb has a bombe chest with inscriptions that supports a triangular obelisk, which has concave sides and is set on a circular base adorned with low relief foliage panels. The obelisk is topped by a flame finial, which was formerly on a gilded ball. This tomb commemorates John Parkhurst, a lexicographer who died in 1765.
