Description
The Stoke Albany War Memorial is located at the north end of the village, on a green near the Church of St Botolph, which is listed as Grade II*, and by the former village school, now the Village Hall, which is also Grade II-listed. Made of limestone, the memorial stands approximately 5 meters tall and features a shallow, three-tiered octagonal base that supports a square plinth. From this plinth rises a square-sectioned shaft topped with a lantern. The lantern has the monogram IHS carved in low relief on two opposing sides, while a wheel-head cross is carved on the other two sides. A ball finial crowns the top.
On the south face of the plinth, the raised lettering reads "IN GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF THOSE WHO/ FELL IN THE GREAT WAR/ 1914 – 1919." The west side bears the inscription "FOR GOD & COUNTRY/ FOR HONOUR & FREEDOM." The east side lists the names of eight individuals who fell, with three additional names from the Second World War added below, marked with the dates 1939 and 1945. The north face states "THEIR NAME LIVETH/ FOR EVERMORE."
