Description

The former Rushton Station and attached station-master's house is a mid-19th century building made of pale squared coursed limestone, featuring red and blue brick dressings. It has slate roofs adorned with decorative barge boards, along with brick ridge and lateral stacks. The station building is a single storey with an entrance front that includes a round-headed doorway on the left, which leads to a passage to the platform. There are four pairs of round-headed windows with hood-moulds and fixed lattice glazing, and the eaves are decorated with brick dentils. On the platform side, the building has gables for the waiting room and similar pairs of round-headed windows, although these do not have hood-moulds, flanking a slitted entrance arch. Inside, there are panelled doors leading to three rooms labelled as LADIES ROOM, STATION MASTER, and BOOKING HALL, and the interiors remain remarkably complete with panelling and office fittings. The two-storey station-master's house is positioned at right angles to the station and features similar windows, but with sashes, on both the ground and first floors of the gable end. The entrance has a house and a low projecting wing, with a simpler single-light window on the first floor to the left.
