APETHORPE

TL0295 APETHORPE PARK 1745/18/10007 Walls, balustrades and steps to south 25-JAN-01 west and south of Apethorpe Palace

GV II

Walls, balustrades and steps. c.1905. By Sir Reginald Blomfield for Lord Brassey. Ashlar and coursed rubblestone. From the southwest corner of Apethorpe Palace (qv) a coursed rubblestone retaining wall extends southwards with ashlar buttresses at intervals. These extend upwards as the piers of a balustrade with double-ended balusters. Near the house and at the south end the wall is broken by sets of steps, that to south consisting of several sets of steps and landings. From this point the wall extends eastwards as a retaining wall to the lawn to south and finishes in another set of steps with low wall to the side surmounted by a twin-handled urn. These walls, balustrades and steps form part of the significant group of items surrounding the house at Apethorpe. The gardens at Apethorpe are included in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade II.
