Description
The walls, balustrades, and steps located to the southwest and south of Apethorpe Palace were constructed around 1905 by Sir Reginald Blomfield for Lord Brassey. They are made of ashlar and coursed rubblestone. Starting from the southwest corner of Apethorpe Palace, a coursed rubblestone retaining wall extends southward, featuring ashlar buttresses at intervals. These buttresses rise to form the piers of a balustrade adorned with double-ended balusters. Close to the house and at the southern end, the wall is interrupted by sets of steps, with the southern set comprising several steps and landings. From this point, the wall continues eastward as a retaining wall for the lawn to the south, concluding with another set of steps accompanied by a low wall topped with a twin-handled urn. These walls, balustrades, and steps are part of the important group of features surrounding Apethorpe Palace. The gardens at Apethorpe are also recognized in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade II.
