Description
Gardener's Cottage at Apethorpe Palace is a cottage built around 1905 by Sir Reginald Blomfield for Lord Brassey. It is constructed from coursed Edith Weston stone with stone dressings and features a Collyweston slate roof with coped gables, finials, and moulded stone stacks. The cottage is designed in a Vernacular Revival style, showcasing stone mullioned windows, mostly with lead casements, and hoodmoulds.
The plan consists of a single depth, four-unit layout with a staircase located to the center left. It is a single storey with an attic and includes a two-storey porch that faces the entrance, featuring a basket-arched doorway leading to a porch with settles on either side and a part-glazed door. There are two 2-light windows on the sides of the porch and a 3-light window above it. The front of the cottage has a 3-light window to the left and two 2-light windows to the right. Each gable end has a 5-light window on both floors, while the rear features 3- and 4-light wood casements under wood lintels, along with a twin-gabled dormer and a single-storey wing.
Inside, the cottage includes a stick baluster staircase, 2-panel doors, and cast-iron fireplaces in the bedrooms. This Gardener's Cottage is part of a significant group with the Walled Gardens and other structures surrounding Apethorpe Palace. The gardens are listed in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade II.
