Description
The Walled Gardens at Apethorpe Palace are garden walls dating from the early to mid-19th century. They are constructed of red brick, paler brick, and coursed rubblestone. There are two complete sets of walls: the northern set measures approximately 30 by 70 meters, while the southern set is about 80 by 50 meters, sharing most of one wall. The northern wall features mainly high brick walls with stone coping and entrance gateways, and the eastern section showcases finely gauged brickwork. Along the northern wall, there is a large glasshouse built around 1905, with a range of lean-to bothies located outside the wall. The southern wall is made of stone and continues southward as another high walled garden. Part of its length and at the bottom consists of brick arranged in a bond of headers and stretchers on end, with a rubble-filled cavity in between, creating an unusually thick wall. The walls are topped with stone slate coping. On the outer edge, at the re-entrant angle where the walls enclose part of the "secret garden," there are stone panels inscribed with sayings or quotations. These garden walls are a significant group alongside the Gardener's Cottage, the Sunken Garden, and other features at Apethorpe, all of which were part of the 19th-century developments for the Earls of Westmorland. The gardens at Apethorpe are also listed in the English Heritage Register of Parks and Gardens at Grade II.
