Description

The walls and attached steps located to the southeast of Bulwick Hall extend approximately 100 meters south and 150 meters southwest. These garden and terrace walls were likely laid out around 1676 for James Tryon, with the majority of the walls dating from the 18th century and restored in the 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed from squared coursed limestone and squared coursed limestone faced with red brick, featuring sections with ashlar coping and others with brick header coping.

The southern wall serves as a retaining wall for the terrace and includes attached steps that consist of two flights with half landings that meet at the center of the terrace. The 20th-century handrails incorporate remnants of 18th-century ironwork. The wall adjacent to Bulwick Hall includes a pair of ashlar seat niches with semi-circular heads, which resemble those found in the entrance loggia. Gateways in the walls are connected by wooden gates. James Tryon's original garden featured two parterres in front of Bulwick Hall, likely situated within the area enclosed by the terrace wall and the walls at right angles to either end of the terrace. The area enclosed by the walls to the south was also probably part of James Tryon's garden.
