Description
The summerhouse, located approximately 250 meters northeast of Ecton Hall, is a notable structure possibly dating from the late 17th century but more likely from the mid 18th century, attributed to the architect Sanderson Miller. It is built of squared coursed lias with ashlar dressings, and it likely has a lead roof, although this is not visible. The building features an oval plan and stands two storeys tall.
The ground floor has an open arcade supported by two Tuscan columns, complemented by similar pilasters. At the rear of the ground floor, there is an oculus with a plain stone surround and keyblocks, flanked by Tuscan pilasters. A frieze runs between the floors, topped with a cornice. The first floor includes three windows with leaded casements, adorned with moulded and eared architraves, and flanked by pilasters with Corinthian capitals. There is also a door opening on the first floor with a curved door that leads to a flight of stone steps featuring a moulded stone parapet. Some first-floor openings are decorated with laurel garlands on the architraves, while others display oak leaf motifs in the frieze above. The structure is finished with dentilled and moulded stone cornices and has a flat roof with a lead spout projecting from the window head.
Inside, the ground floor contains an oval stone table supported by a central column, along with wooden benching that has a panelled back. The first-floor room features similar benching, and all windows are fitted with shutters. A comparable summerhouse designed by Sanderson Miller can be found in the grounds of Farnborough Hall in Warwickshire.
