Description
Nos. 38 to 46 on Church Lane are a group of five almshouses built in 1868 by E.F. Law for Charlotte Palmer. They are constructed from squared coursed ironstone and topped with a Collyweston slate roof. Each almshouse has a two-unit plan and is a single storey. The buildings form an eight-window range featuring two- and four-light stone mullion windows with diamond leaded panes. The end bays project forward as gabled cross wings, each with a single-light loft window in the apex.
There are three plank doors with strap hinges located between the windows, set in moulded stone surrounds with four-centred heads. The central door is topped with a small corbelled gable. The gable parapets and kneelers are made of ashlar, and there are ashlar stacks at the ridge. Above the central door, a tablet bears the inscription: "Hospital of the blessed Jesus in Carlton. Founded by Sir Geoffrey Palmer Bart. Anno Domini 1668. Rebuilt and more amply endowed by Charlotte Palmer Anno Domini 1868." The side elevations on the left and right are similar, featuring entrance doors to the end houses. The interiors have not been inspected.
