Description
This row of three cottages, located at 1, 3, and 5 St Andrew's Lane, is likely from the late 17th century and has undergone some alterations over the years. The cottages are constructed from coursed limestone rubble and feature a thatched roof, with a coped left gable and three brick ridge stacks. They are two storeys high.
No. 1 has a panelled and part-glazed door, flanked by three-light small-paned casement windows on either side, all with wooden lintels. There are two similar windows above. No. 3 features a 20th-century porch, a three-light small-paned casement window, and part of French doors on the ground floor, along with two three-light windows above, all with wooden lintels. No. 5 includes two French doors, a 20th-century porch that has a reset County firemark, a three-light window on the ground floor, and three three-light gudgeon-hung metal frame casements on the first floor, also with wooden lintels.
Inside, there is a small inglenook in the ground-floor right-hand room, with the end of a bressumer exposed in the front wall. At the rear of No. 5, there is a wing that contains a bakehouse, featuring a very large chamfered spine beam and several ovens, including one of colossal size, which was in use until around 1950.
