Description

Porters Lodge and the attached wall is a gatehouse built around 1841, likely designed by John Crake for the Brudenell family of Deene Hall. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features lead and slate roofs. The central gate arch has a four-centred arch head with decorated spandrels and is flanked by octagonal castellated turrets that have gargoyles at the corners. These turrets are three stages high and include arrow slits on alternating levels. A moulded string course separates the stages, and a castellated parapet between the turrets displays a large central armorial plaque topped with a weathervane.

To the left of the gate arch is the lodge house, which likely has a single unit plan that includes a scullery. This two-storey structure has a one-window range, featuring a four-light canted bay window on the ground floor with wooden mullions, arch-headed lights, and a castellated parapet. The first floor has a two-light window, also with arch-headed lights, and a gable above. A moulded string course runs between the floors, and the gable ends have ashlar parapets. There is an ashlar stack with octagonal flues at one end.

To the right of the lodge house is an arch-headed doorway that leads to a porch connecting to the gate arch. Above the parapet wall is a small pyramid roof, and there is a plaque with linked initials above the porch. A second archway provides access to the side of the porch. The gate arch features a pair of wooden gates with arched openwork decoration. A low wall attached to the right of the gate arch has tall octagonal piers and is part of the gatehouse layout, with a wall approximately one metre east of the Porters Lodge. The interior has not been inspected.
