Description

The Old School House and attached studio, located at No. 83 Corby High Street, is a building that dates from the mid-18th century and early 19th century. Originally a school house and chapel, it has been converted into a house and studio. The structure is made of squared coursed limestone with an ashlar facade and features a concrete tile roof. It has a three-unit plan and stands two storeys tall with an attic.

The front of the building has a four-window range of cross casements with glazing bars, all set under stone lintels with keyblocks. There is a 19th-century plank door in the center, which has a fanlight above it, and a 20th-century door to the far left, both also under stone lintels with keyblocks. A central 20th-century roof dormer adds to the design. The gable ends have ashlar parapets and kneelers, along with ashlar stacks that feature moulded cornices at the ridge and ends.

The left gable, which faces the road, is similar in style. The rear of the building includes two stone mullion windows. The former chapel, likely built in the early 19th century, is attached to the right gable and has a two-window range of tall casements under wooden lintels. The right gable features a plain arch-head window opening, and the elevation facing Meeting Lane has a similar window, along with a 20th-century door to the right.

Although the interior of the house was not inspected, it is noted to have panelled window reveals. The interior of the chapel retains a gallery that has been remodelled in the 20th century. The property also includes No. 2A Meeting Lane.
