Description
School House, originally a boys school and masters house, is now a private residence. It features datestones from 1595 and 1760. The building is constructed of squared coursed ironstone with a slate roof and has an L-shaped plan. It is two storeys tall, with part of it having an attic. The main front, which faces the road, has a three-window range at the ground floor, consisting of two- and three-light stone-mullioned windows with leaded lights. To the left, there is a gabled cross wing dating from around 1595, which has a 19th-century plank door to the right, topped with a four-centred moulded stone head. The two-window range to the right is of a different construction. The building features ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, with ironstone stacks at the gable ends of the cross wing and ashlar stacks at the ridge and end of the right range. A single-storey extension on the far right has a datestone from 1760 in a covered way. The pear elevation facing the churchyard is similar, with three- and four-light stone-mullion windows in the cross wing. There is a datestone from 1595 on the return wall and a Royal coat of arms in the gable with the initials E.R. Inside, there are some chamfered ceiling beams. The building was endowed as a boys school in 1595 by Richard Walker and was closed as a school in 1961.
