Description

The Vicarage, now serving as a vicarage and two houses, dates back to 1688 and features 18th-century additions. Built for Roger Altham, it is constructed from squared coursed ironstone and topped with a Collyweston slate roof. Originally designed as a three-unit plan, it has been modified to a U-shaped layout. The building stands two storeys high with an attic and has a seven-window range. The central entrance features a glazed door framed by a 20th-century moulded wood surround. The windows are four-light wooden cross designs with leaded glass, set under wooden lintels. There are four flat-top roof dormers with leaded lights, along with ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, as well as brick and stone stacks at the ridge and ends. A datestone from 1688 is located on the first floor to the left of the entrance. The left elevation, now known as Chantry House, likely dates from the 18th century and includes some sash windows. The right elevation, now Bede House, is similar and features a datestone from 1836. Attached to Chantry House is a late 18th-century coach house, which has a central carriage arch and three gables with hayloft doors. Inside, there is an early 19th-century staircase with a stick balustrade leading to the first floor, and a 17th-century staircase with a turned balustrade leading to the attics. The interior also includes panelled window reveals, some 17th and 18th-century panelled doors, and the remains of an open fireplace in the hall.
