Description
The Forge is a house that likely dates from the late 17th century and was altered in the 19th century. Originally timber framed, it is now constructed of brick and stone, with some areas rendered, and has a thatched roof. The building originally had a three-unit plan but has been modified to two units. It is a single storey with an attic and features a two-window range of early 20th century canted bay windows. There are two eyebrow dormers in the attic, each with casement windows. The central entrance is a 19th century plank door set beneath a flat brick arch. Evidence of the original timber frame can be seen at the eaves level. The building has brick and stone stacks at both ends, with the right gable rendered and the left gable rebuilt in brickwork during the 20th century when the end unit was removed. The front and rear elevations are brick, while the right gable is stone. Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to have spine beams, some plank doors, and likely an open fireplace that is now blocked. The forge was originally attached to the right side of the main front. This building is included for its group value.
