Description
The staff cottages, shop, changing rooms, ancillary buildings, and attached gatepier at Harrowden Hall are stables and domestic buildings that have been converted into three dwellings, a shop, and changing rooms for the golf club. They likely date from the late 17th century to early 18th century and have been altered in the 19th and 20th centuries. The buildings are constructed from squared coursed limestone and lias, with lias ashlar and roofs made of copper and Collyweston slate.
The layout is T-shaped and consists of two storeys. The main front features an 18th-century range of eight sash windows with glazing bars and plain stone architraves on the right. The shallow pitched roof is not visible and is topped with two tall stone stacks. The central range, which projects at right angles, has an eight-window range of sashes with glazing bars on the first floor, while the ground floor includes some 20th-century windows and doors. A dentilled wood cornice and shallow domed roof are present.
Attached to the left are the late 17th-century and 19th-century Hall Cottages, which display a nine-window range of 20th-century casements set in original openings beneath stone lintels with keyblocks. There are four blocked carriage arches at the ground floor, with three 20th-century doors positioned between the window ranges. The buildings feature ashlar gable parapets and kneelers, along with a pitched roof that has ashlar stacks at the ridge and ends. A panelled tablet is located in the centre. The 18th-century gatepier is attached to the right of the central range. The rear of the building has some cross windows under wood lintels. The interior has not been inspected. This group of buildings is connected to the north of Harrowden Hall and is part of a larger historical context, with the gardens and park included in the HBMC County Register of Gardens at Grade II*.
