Description
Top Lodge and its attached barn granary, outbuildings, and shelter sheds are a farmhouse that has been converted into a house. The datestones indicate construction in 1761 and 1771, with likely alterations in the early 19th century. The building is made of squared coursed limestone and features a Collyweston slate roof. It has a double depth plan and stands two storeys tall with attics. The main facade has three windows, with a central four-panel door set under a stone lintel with a keyblock. The sash windows have glazing bars, with eight panes on the first floor and six panes on the ground floor, all beneath gauged stone heads. There are three hipped roof dormers with casement windows, and the gable ends feature ashlar parapets and ashlar stacks. The left gable displays a datestone. The rear elevation includes casement windows and a shallow wooden projection at the centre of the first floor.
An outbuilding attached to the left of the main front connects to the barn and granary. The barn features a central cart entrance with a wooden lintel and a relieving arch above, flanked by buttresses, with a similar buttress on the right side. The granary has an external flight of stone steps. To the far left, there is a range of shelter sheds with ten bays of open-fronted segmental-head arcades. The barn and granary have a 20th-century concrete tile roof and a renewed roof structure. The interior of the house has not been inspected but is noted to have panelled window reveals, an 18th-century staircase with turned balusters, a large kitchen fireplace that is now blocked, and original numbered roof trusses.
