Description

The Old House is a former rectory that has been converted into a house. It has origins dating back to the mid-17th century and was remodeled in the early 18th century, with a date of 1838 noted, and it was extended in 1938. The building is constructed of squared coursed limestone and features a Collyweston slate roof. Originally designed in a double-depth layout, it now has an L-shaped plan.

The house is two storeys tall with an attic and has a main front that consists of a four-window range. The central entrance features a part-glazed door with a plain surround. On either side of the door are circular windows that have glazing bars and plain ashlar surrounds. The other windows are sash windows, also with glazing bars, plain ashlar architraves, sills, and similar wooden heads. The roof includes dormers, ashlar gable parapets, and ashlar stacks at the ridge. The circular windows are likely a result of 19th-century re-fenestration.

To the left of the main front is a late 19th-century wooden bay window and a range added around 1938, designed in a style that complements the main house. The right elevation features a rainwater head with the date 1838 inscribed on it. The rear elevation has two leaded cross-windows, with the first-floor window containing some original glass.

Inside, there is a 17th-century staircase with turned balusters that rises around an open-well with quarter landings. The attic flight is likely restored. Other rooms have probably been remodeled in 1938, with the dining room featuring reset panelling.
