Description
The market cross, located approximately 8 meters east of The Sondes Arms Public House, is likely from the 14th century but was rebuilt in 1894. It is constructed from limestone ashlar and features an original octagonal socket with broaches on two 19th-century steps. The cross has a 19th-century octagonal shaft topped with a foliated cross finial. Attached to the base of the steps is a semi-circular stone basin. A metal plaque around the shaft bears the inscription, "Rebuilt 1894 on the remains of the old market cross of the village she loved so well. In memory of Laura Maria Watson who died March 21 1893," with the Watson arms displayed on the rear of the plaque.
