Description

The Sondes Arms Public House, dating from 1668 with alterations from the 18th century, is a public house located on the west side of the A6003 in Rockingham. It is constructed from squared coursed ironstone with limestone dressings. The main building features a Collyweston slate roof, while the attached stables have a thatch roof. Originally designed with a three-unit plan, the structure is two storeys high with an attic.

The first floor has a four-window range of leaded cross windows, and the ground floor features 18th-century sash windows with glazing bars, all set under stone lintels with keyblocks. A central 20th-century door is framed by an early 20th-century moulded stone surround. There are three hipped roof dormers with leaded casements, ashlar gable parapets, and brick stacks at the ridge and ends.

To the right, there is a small early 20th-century single-unit extension that is now part of the public house. Attached to the left are 18th-century outbuildings that connect to the stables, which form a U-shaped range. The stables are single storey with haylofts above. The elevation facing the road features a central hayloft door set in an eaves dormer, flanked by two buttresses. The courtyard elevation is similar, with stable doors under wood lintels and hayloft doors above.

At the rear of the public house, there is a gabled staircase projection. The interior of the public house was remodelled in the 20th century but retains the remains of an open fireplace to the right of the entrance.
