Description

The Shambles is a house located on Bulwick Main Street, likely built in the mid to late 18th century and altered in the early 19th century. It is constructed of squared coursed limestone and features a Collyweston slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan and is a single storey with an attic. The front elevation facing the road has a two-window range of 19th-century unhorned sash windows, complete with glazing bars, set beneath stone lintels with keyblocks. There are two hipped eaves dormers in the attic that contain 19th-century casement windows. The house has a chamfered plinth and brick stacks at both ends.

To the right of the main elevation, there are three hipped roof dormers similar to those on the front, but with one 20th-century window in the center. The ground floor features a 19th-century tripartite sash window with glazing bars under a wooden lintel on the left, while the other ground floor windows are 19th-century style casements under wooden lintels. A part-glazed door is located on the far left, accompanied by two 20th-century porches positioned to the left and right of the center. There are brick stacks at the ridge and end.

Inside, the staircase rises between walls, and there are two six-panel doors in the entrance hall. The room to the left of the entrance contains an early 19th-century fireplace and a cupboard with a domed back and curved shelves. The room on the far right features a 19th-century cast iron range. The room to the left of the entrance, which abuts the road, was likely rebuilt in the early 19th century.
