Description

Wendover House School is a special school that was formerly the Manor House. The northwest part of the building dates from the early 18th century, while it was altered and greatly extended around 1870 by George Devey. The structure is made of red brick, featuring diaper patterns in blue headers in the 19th-century sections, and has stone dressings on the 19th-century bay windows. It has a tiled roof with a large central chimney on the 18th-century wing, and moulded brick eaves and gable verges.

The building is two storeys high, with the 19th-century section including an attic and raised above a basement. The north front shows the 18th-century wing on the left, which has a gable with three-light segmental arched casements on each floor, a smaller central gable with a three-light upper window and a four-light window below, and three-light windows on the ground floor on each side, all of which are segmental arched. The modern first-floor windows are part of the 19th-century section on the right, which features a high gable with a two-storey canted bay window topped with a moulded parapet, a two-light attic window above, and a two-light gabled dormer in the centre. There is a large projecting brick chimney on the right, which has been reduced to eaves level with a tiled capping.

The main entrances are accessed via a three-arched wood verandah with a tiled lean-to roof and four stone steps. There is a door on the left, an oval window in a stone architrave on the right, and a second circular window in a brick surround on the first floor to the right. The garden elevation features a curved wall leading to the entrance verandah and a semicircular arched doorway on the left. There is a tall gable with a two-storey square bay window that has a hipped tile roof, along with three-light attic windows above and five-light windows on both the first and ground floors. The recessed section on the right includes a stone bow window with six lights at the angle, with 18th-century brickwork to the right.

Inside, the principal rooms from around 1870 are designed in an 18th-century style and include four fine late 18th-century carved wood chimneypieces located in the former Dining Room and Dining Room on the ground floor, as well as on the first-floor landing and northeast bedroom. A ground floor room to the south of the entrance hall features a 1870 wood chimneypiece with an overmantel supported by Corinthian columns, framing an oval window, and mirror glass reveals also with oval frames.
