Description
The Parish Church of St Mary is a Grade II* listed building located on Church Lane in Wendover. It dates back to the 14th century and underwent restorations in 1839 and 1869 by the architect George Edmund Street. The church is constructed of flint rubble with random blocks of stone and ashlar stone dressings, with the older parts of the church featuring limestone from the restoration. The roofs are tiled, except for the lead covering on the nave aisles.
The church comprises a nave, aisles, a chancel, a 19th-century vestry on the north side, and a chapel on the south side. It features an embattled west tower topped with a small spike, traceried belfry windows, and a small lancet window with shafts on the mid-stage of the north side. There is also a stair turret on the south side and heavy buttresses. Many of the traceried windows have been restored. The 19th-century south porch contains a 14th-century doorway adorned with ball flower ornamentation, while the north porch is made of oak.
Inside, there is a 14th-century tower arch and a later 14th-century nave with five bays, supported by tall columns featuring leaf carvings on their capitals. The church also includes 19th-century fittings, such as a circular marble pulpit, which is likely the work of Street.
