Description
Latimer House, also known as the National Defence College, is a symmetrical red brick mansion built between 1834 and 1838 by E Blore. It features two storeys with attics in a Tudor style, complete with ashlar dressings and slate roofs. The building has moulded octagonal shafts on the stacks, crenellated parapets, and mullioned and transomed casements.
The south front showcases three shallow projecting gabled bays within a total of nine bays. The east or entrance front consists of five bays, with the outer bays being gabled and projecting. A central porch is topped with an oriel window and features a date plaque from 1863. Inside, there is an entrance hall and staircase located behind a rib-vaulted passage, along with other rib-vaulted ceilings.
A link range connects to the north courtyard, which includes north and west ranges of two storeys, and an east screen wall that is battlemented. At the southeast angle of the north range, there is a clock tower topped with a cupola.
