Description

This is a pair of houses located on Bicester Road in Oakley, originally known as Nos. 1 and 2, Church Cottages. The houses date from the 17th century, with alterations made in the early 18th century, an addition in the early 19th century, and further changes in the later 19th and 20th centuries. The central two bays are built of thin chequer brick; the left bay is a mix of red and vitreous brick, with greensand rubble to the gable. Later brick extensions are visible. The roof is tiled, with a central brick chimney rebuilt with grouped shafts, and a rear chimney stack has been removed.

The houses are one storey and attic, with four bays. The windows are wooden casements; the ground floor windows have irregular segmental heads dating to the 19th century, and the attic windows are set within late 19th- and early 20th-century dormers with shaped bargeboards. Doors are situated in the outer bays, and a single-storey extension projects from the right side.

Inside the central bays, the original timber frame is visible, including main posts and wall-plates. The roof structure features chamfered spine beams, with the left beam having run-out stops.
