Description

The Strict Baptist Chapel, now disused, was founded in 1813, with a date of 1815 marked on the brickwork. It was extended by one bay to the southwest in 1866. The early 19th-century section is constructed of chequer brick, featuring a plinth, boarded eaves, and a 20th-century concrete tile roof that is hipped to the left. The building is two storeys high and has three bays. The northwest front includes four-pane sash windows with thin glazing bars and cambered heads. There are central double doors that are flush-panelled, topped with a semi-circular radiating fanlight. A rendered porch from around 1830 features a moulded cornice and a shallow pointed parapet. The later bay to the right is made of white brick with red brick quoins and has a rendered gable. It has a similar sash window on the first floor above a flush-panelled door with a gauged head. The gable facing the street has two bays of recessed sash windows, a small louvred opening in the attic, and a lower extension to the right.

Inside, there is a gallery from around 1832 that wraps around three sides, supported by slender cast iron columns and featuring a plain panelled front. The north gallery contains contemporary pews, and there is a contemporary pulpit along with an altered baptismal pool. The 1866 addition was formerly used as a vestry and schoolroom. The property is also enclosed by ornamental iron railings and gates, with dwarf walls topped with ogee copings.
