Description

The Old Post Office is a house dating probably from the 16th century, with a cross wing rebuilt in the 17th century and altered in the 19th century. The left side of the house has a timber frame of irregular timbers, including one curved brace, with whitewashed brick infill. The remainder of the building was rebuilt in brick, with some parts rendered and whitewashed, and the left gable hung with shingles. The right bay has an old tile roof, while the cross wing has a re-tiled roof. Brick chimneys are located on the right and to the left side of the cross wing. A lower bay to the right, possibly once a hall, is now single-storey with an attic. A two-storey, projecting gabled cross wing is to the left, with a 20th-century extension to the rear. The windows are paired barred wooden casements, with one in a small gabled dormer window in the attic. A board door is located to the left of the right bay. Inside, the right bay has an inserted upper floor and remains of a substantial queen strut truss. The left bay also has later floor timbers. Between the bays, a pointed timber arch, chamfered on the right side, is incorporated into the wall of the cross wing and is of earlier origin.
