Description

Cores End United Reformed Church is a church built in 1804 and enlarged and reseated in 1881 for the Rev. C. Talbot, Minister, as noted on a plaque. The building is constructed of brick and has a slate roof. The entrance bay, which dates from 1881, features a rendered plinth, dado rail, impost band, entablature, parapet, and pediment. Rendered pilasters with acanthus caps mark the angles, and there is a three-bay blind portico. The central bay of the portico has an architrave arched over a semi-circular headed three-light window with roundel tracery. Below this, double doors are set in a gabled porch with a semi-circular fanlight and an architrave arch on piers with acanthus caps. The flanking bays of the portico have lower two-light windows with architrave arches and keyblocks, along with rendered aprons that feature oval inscription tablets detailing the building's history. The parapet is topped with ball finials.

Beyond the entrance bay is the original 1804 block, made of red and vitreous brick with dentil eaves, which has four bays of semi-circular arched windows with altered glazing. At the far end, there are late 19th-century extensions that include meeting rooms and a lobby. Inside, the original far wall retains arched windows, now blind, flanking an arched niche. The interior was otherwise refitted in 1881, featuring a gallery and reading desk with ornamental cast iron balustrades. There are two stained glass windows from 1905 and 19th-century marble tablets commemorating former rectors from 1809, 1831, and 1856.
