Description
The Old Bell is a public house located on Wooburn Town Lane. It features two bays from the late 16th to 17th century on the right, a three-bay gabled cross wing from the 17th century, and a late 19th-century extension on the left. The building has undergone alterations in the 19th and 20th centuries. It is constructed of colourwashed brick and render, with exposed timber framing on the upper storey of the right bays and the left side of the cross wing. The roofs were re-tiled in the 20th century, and there is a central rebuilt chimney made of narrow brick.
The building stands two storeys high and has four bays on the front. The windows are irregular wooden casements from the 19th and early 20th centuries, with the upper right window being a gabled oriel supported by a shaped bracket. The ground floor right windows and an old board door between them have minimal board hoods on shaped brackets. To the left of the right bays, there is a 20th-century half-glazed door with a pedimented hood on brackets. The left bays feature transomed ground floor windows and a circa 1900 pulvinated wooden frieze with small end gablets at the first-floor level. This frieze slightly projects over the cross wing window, which is adorned with narrow ornamental pilasters. The 19th-century extension has dentil eaves and small 20th-century extensions at the rear. Additionally, there is a single-storey outbuilding attached to the rear corner of the cross wing.
