Description

Elmhurst, now comprising flats numbered 1 to 7, dates from the 18th century but incorporates fabric of an earlier building. The structure is primarily red and grey brick with red brick dressings, and has an old tiled roof hidden behind a parapet. The building is two storeys high with an attic, and features a band marking the first floor and a moulded cornice. A covered entrance is topped by a 19th-century semi-circular cast iron roof with a geometrically traceried fanlight above the door. The doorway itself is round-headed, with vermiculated rustication and a mask keyblock, likely made of Coade stone; it contains a large round-headed window with a wheel pattern of glazing and a semi-circular pediment with a recessed panel above. To the left, two storeys feature three sash windows within reveals, each with a flat arch on both floors, with small blank panels above the first-floor windows, also with flat arches. The section to the right includes an attic with three dummy windows and panels incorporated into the parapet. The interior shows evidence of a late 16th-century house, including a staircase, two doorcases, and roof timbers.
