Description
Little Kingshill War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was unveiled in 1920. It is situated on the south side of Windsor Lane in Little Missenden and is constructed from mixed stock brick, stone, black knapped flint, and clay tiles.
The memorial features a decorative brick pillar topped by a gablet facing north-east. The brickwork is laid in a Sussex bond, with lighter and darker bricks arranged alternately on the front face to form a regular pattern. At the apex of the gablet, made of black knapped flint, there is a decorative terracotta roundel displaying the Latin motto PRO PATRIA in relief. A chamfered-brick string course encircles the monument at mid-height and at the base. The top of the memorial is capped with a single-pitched tiled roof, which has rounded tiles along the ridge-line.
On the front face, there are two rectangular stone tablets that list the names of the fallen. The upper tablet reads: "IN REMEMBRANCE OF THE MEN OF LITTLE KINGSHILL/WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR ENGLAND IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919/(NAMES)." The lower tablet states: "AND IN THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945/(NAMES)." Below this tablet, there is an inset cross made of black knapped flint.
