Description

Ashwell's Farmhouse is a 15th-century timber-framed hall house originally comprising two bays. The roof space shows smoke blackening, indicating its historic use as a working farmhouse. The original two-story bay is located on the right, while the structure was recased in the 18th century and extended to the left and at a right angle to the right. A floor was inserted into the hall during the 17th or late 16th century, and a large, double-sided inglenook fireplace was added to the hall bay. The early two-story section retains plain spine beams and joists, which are chamfered and have stop-chamfered spine beams with run-out stops at the inserted floor level. The front of the house is constructed of flint with brick dressings and a band course, and features modern windows. A former lobby entry is positioned in front of the stack. The building has old tile roofs. A north-west range, one and a half storeys high with one dormer window, is present, along with a south-east range also one and a half storeys high.
