Description
Welders House is a building constructed between 1898 and 1899 by Mervyn Macartney for his father-in-law, C.T. Ritchie, who served as Home Secretary in 1900 and Chancellor of the Exchequer from 1902 to 1903. The house is made of red brick and features two storeys plus gabled attics, designed in the Artisan Mannerist style reminiscent of the early 17th century.
The south garden front includes leaded windows and three shaped gables, while there is a canted two-storey bay window on the left side. The ground and first floors have mullioned and transomed casements, and the gabled attics contain three-light casements. The west front also displays two shaped gables. The north entrance front features a full-height gabled projecting entrance bay, with a recessed entry behind the projection, which is made of channelled rubbed brick with key blocks, a band, and a semi-circular gable above. A service range is located to the east, and the building is topped with tiled roofs.
