Description
Mayflower Barn, located to the south-west of Old Jordans Hostel, is a 17th-century timber-framed and weather-boarded barn consisting of three bays, which was extended by two bays in the 18th century. The barn features two wagon entries, with those on the south elevation set in gabled projecting bays. There are lean-tos situated between the porches and to the west of the left-hand porch. The structure has an old brick plinth that has been repaired, and it is topped with an old tile roof. Inside, it has queen strut trusses with either curved or straight braces to the tie beams, along with braced purlins. The barn is noted for its associations with the Quakers and is believed by some to incorporate timbers from the Mayflower, the ship that carried the Pilgrim Fathers to New England in 1620. The barn has been restored in the early 20th century, with barred casement windows added to the north and end elevations.
