Description
This cottage, originally workers' housing, was built in 1919 as part of the Quaker Trust's planned community at Jordans, designed by Fred Rowntree based on plans from 1916. It is constructed of brick with a tile roof, featuring wood windows including sashes and casements, and wooden doors. The cottage is a single double-depth range with a three-part facade along its length. It has a deep pitched roof with a central, projecting gabled section on the first floor, containing a central sash window above a main entrance door which is flanked by smaller windows. At ground floor, it has sash windows to either side of the central bay. The end elevations are characterised by prominent stacks with diagonal shafts – two to the north gable and four to the south. The gable ends incorporate multi-pane windows to both the front and rear, at ground, first and attic levels. The interior has not been inspected. The cottage is situated just off the 1919 Village Green, at the heart of the village of Jordans. It forms a group with the other surviving terraces around the Village Green, which were initially built at Jordans and intended for workers at Jordans Village Industries. The listing recognises its contribution to the group value of the historically significant Jordans village and its importance as a range of largely unaltered and well-designed workers' housing.
