Description

The Green 1 and 2 are a pair of cottages, originally built as workers' housing in 1920. Designed by Fred Rowntree for the Quaker Trust, they are constructed with brick walls and tile roofs, featuring wooden windows.

The cottages are arranged as a range of two attached dwellings, with entrances opening onto the long elevation. They have pitched roofs, with small windows on the first floor and projecting gables on each cottage. Each gable incorporates a main door and a larger window on the ground floor, and prominent chimneys are situated to the right-hand side of each cottage. The windows are wood flush-framed with multi-paned sashes and casements.

The interior is believed to be plain, reflecting their original use as workers’ cottages.

The cottages directly face the 1919 Village Green in Jordans, which forms the heart of the village. Jordans was developed from 1919 according to designs drawn up in 1916, and the terrace forms part of a group with other surviving terraces around the Village Green. These were the first buildings constructed at Jordans and were intended to house workers at Jordans Village Industries.

The terraces are listed due to their contribution to the group value of the historically important Jordans village, and as a well-designed range of largely unaltered workers' housing.
