Description

The Church of St Edward is a parish church that was rebuilt by Sir Gilbert Scott in 1862, while retaining the north aisle that was rebuilt in 1828. It is constructed of rubble stone with tiled roofs. The west tower features deeply moulded decorated style openings for the bell chamber, a trefoil parapet, and a stair turret. The nave has three cinquefoil clerestory lights and a corbel table. The south aisle includes paired lancets and a porch, while the north aisle has three windows with Y tracery. The chancel contains two cusped lancets and a ball-flower frieze on the south wall, along with a three-light decorated east window and a vestry on the north side.

Inside, the nave consists of three bays with arcades on octagonal piers. The arcade on the north side has chamfered arches on moulded caps, while the south arcade features moulded arches and caps that are finely carved with naturalistic foliage. Similar caps can be found in the chancel and porch, with carved angels serving as label stops for the chancel windows. The church contains 19th-century glass and a brass memorial to Susan Kyngston from 1540 in the north aisle. There are 18th and 19th-century wall monuments to the Purejoy family, including a fine marble monument to Elizabeth Purejoy dating from around 1740-1750, two monuments by Nollekens from around 1805, and two 19th-century monuments by R Westmacott Jr.
