Description
The Stokenchurch War Memorial is a First World War memorial that was erected in 1925 by Messrs Axtell and Son of Oxford, with additions for the Second World War. It is located on a grassed area next to the Memorial Hall off Wycombe Road.
The memorial features a Latin cross-head with a collar and a trefoil-headed cusp in each angle, which sits atop an octagonal shaft with a splayed foot. This shaft rises from an octagonal, castellated plinth that has a molded, two-stage foot and is set on a five-stepped base. Each side of the plinth includes inset panels with relief-carved tracery at the top. The names of the fallen are incised on these panels.
The dedication on the memorial reads: "TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES FOR THEIR COUNTRY 1914 - 1919." Below this, but outside of the panel, are the dates 1939-1945. The panels list the names of the fallen, with four panels containing the 40 names of those who died in the First World War, and three panels bearing the 31 names from the Second World War.
