Description
Orchard Farmhouse is a house dating back to the 16th century, with later additions from the 17th century and alterations in the 19th. Originally two bays, it now forms an L-shape with a 17th-century wing to the left and a rear extension also dating to the 17th century. An outshot was added to the right and the rear angle in the 19th century. The house is timber-framed with colourwashed brick infill, and has thatched roofs, with a half-hipped roof over the 17th-century bay. A slender 17th-century brick chimney is centrally located, and a 19th-century chimney of flint and brick is to the left.
The front facade has two bays. The left bay has wooden casements with single horizontal glazing bars; two to the ground floor and one in the thatch. The taller, gabled bay to the right has two 3-pane sash windows to the ground floor, and a paired barred wooden casement above. An entry is located within a 19th-century flint and brick outshot with a tiled roof in the rear angle. Another outshot to the right has some visible timber framing.
Inside, the 16th-century bays reveal traces of curved braces in the central partition, which were altered when the 17th-century chimney was inserted. There are also curved wind-braces, and a central queen strut truss.
