Description

Tower Farmhouse is a house dating from the early 17th century. It is located in Boarstall, Main Road. The house is constructed of thin brick in English bond, with a rubble stone plinth, an ashlar band course, a moulded stone cornices just below the eaves, and stone quoins and windows. The roof is tiled in the 20th century, with a hip to the left side. A brick chimney is located between the left bays. Originally, the house was E-plan with short side wings and a central staircase projection to the rear. The left wing had stables in the rear bay, while the right wing has been demolished.

The house is two storeys and an attic, with six bays. It has two-light stone mullion windows with Tudor hoodmoulds and leaded lights. The ground floor windows flanking the front door have been altered to three-light leaded casements with transoms. The main entrance, in the fourth bay, has stone, chamfered jambs and a four-centred arch, with a 20th-century gabled timber porch. There are similar stone doorways to the far left and to the rear of the left wing. The front doors are 20th-century. Irregular lean-to extensions and attic dormers are on the rear. The rear walls are partially of greensand rubble.

The interior retains stop-chamfered spine and cross beams, and timber-framed partitions on the first floor with stop-chamfered doorframes. There are original board doors and an upper flight of spacious 17th-century winder staircase, with a lower flight replaced in the 20th century. The attic of the left wing has a landing balustrade with turned balusters. The rear bay of the left wing contains 17th- to early 19th-century stabling for three horses, with one partition featuring a wooden Doric column.
