Description
Notley Abbey House, formerly known as Notley Abbey, is a historic building located on Chearsley Road in Long Crendon. It dates from the 13th, 15th, and 16th centuries but was remodeled in the 19th and 20th centuries. The house is two storeys high and constructed from rubble stone, with some sections featuring ashlar work. Most of the windows are from the 19th century, designed with stone mullions and transoms, featuring arched lights and hoodmoulds. The roofs are tiled. The current structure is L-shaped, formed from the west range of the cloisters and the Abbot's Lodging. Notley Abbey was founded around 1162 by Walter Giffard, the Earl of Buckingham, for Augustinian Canons. Parts of the grounds are designated as scheduled Ancient Monuments.
