Description
The dovecote located to the north-east of Notley Farm is a significant structure, attributed to the 14th century but likely built in the 16th or 17th century using stone from Notley Abbey. It is a large rectangular building constructed from dressed stones laid in a roughly coursed manner, with spaces for tiles. Some moulded stones can be found within the core of the wall. The dovecote features a high hipped roof covered with old tiles, which includes a dormer at the eaves on the east side and gabled louvres at the rear ridge on both the north and south sides.
Inside, four piers extend from the center of each side, although the northern pier has been replaced by a wooden post. The walls and piers are faced with honeycomb stonework that forms nesting boxes. Tiebeams span between the walls and piers, supporting posts and braced collars that carry three sets of purlins.
